   Historical background
As an independent structural unit  the Department was established in 1996.
The founders of the Department were Professor tiutrin K. Y., Professor Menshenin O.I., associate Professor Matevosyan V.G. The backbone of the Department consisted from associate Professor Egorov E.N., associate Professor Malykhin A.V., associate Professor Zhilenkov A.V., senior lecturer Bolgarsky V.P., teacher Demidov B. G., the head of laboratory Kocenko L.S., master of industrial training Krykhtina N.V.
The subsequent years  the teaching staff of the Department was enriched with  the associate Professor Kazmin V.N., lecturer Kozenkov V.A., Professor Kanatov J.V., senior lecturers: Remnev A.P., Candidate of Biology  Selifonova Zh.P, master of industrial training Kislukhina L.V.,  Candidate of Pedagogy Tkachev V.N., Professor Hudik, V.A, Candidate of Mathematics Rozum I.A.,  Candidate of Mathematics Leonov M.G.
Since 1999  the Department is headed by associate Professor Chernyshev  V. F.

Teaching activities includes lectures, practical classes, diploma engineering  and reviewing of dissertations,  consultation on diploma engineering in specialization “Navigation at the sea". Developed work programs for conventional disciplines according to the requirements of the  Convention , providing them with teaching materials.

   Research interests:
●safety in Maritime transport;
● fire safety in ports and on ships.
Over the last 5 years were published 12 scientific papers, 9 textbooks. The department is a member of scientific councils of the University and  faculty. Awarded by government awards.

The main scientific directions of the Department
The Maritime security
The development of the concept of building models behavior: emergency situations o ships; the prevention of pollution of the marine environment and atmosphere from ships; fire safety in ports and on ships; survival at sea after leaving the vessel (medical aspects);
The prediction of professional risks (illness and accidents);
The substantiation and development of techniques for the reduction of professional risks;
The implementation of the optimization principle in the management of labor protection;
The optimization of planning and the monitoring of working conditions;
The optimization of labor safety management at the Navy.
The improvement of the educational process at the disciplines of the Department, methods of training, retraining and advanced training of engineers for the protection of labor, managers and specialists of organizations.
The Department conducts joint research with marine companies, Maritime administration, ship repair plant in theoretical and socio-economic problems first of all  for sea transport according to the profile of the Department. Installed creative relationships with departments of other universities, distributes the experience of leading lecturers. The Department participates in the execution of the contractual and the state budget themes.

Practical activity
Practical activity of the Department is aimed at the promoting  of a culture of life safety of cadets - students. This activity is focused on the requirements defined by the state standard and requirements of the educational program for cadets - students in the discipline "life safety" in all faculties of the University, and convection disciplines for navigation and engineering specialties.
During the practical activities  the staff of the Department solves the following tasks:
1. The education and formation of cadets - students ' views about the inseparable unity of effective professional activity with the requirements of the safety and security of people in the production (ship) and non-production conditions of environment, the ability to survive in emergency situations;
 2. Training and formation of knowledge and intellectual abilities that define the horizons of personality, direction of estimates, values, mental skills of safe behavior and results safe operation;
3. Training and formation of motivational and value orientations (motives, interests, needs, attitudes, beliefs)that determine the manifestation of activity in emergency situations;
4. Training of culture safety and the formation of a worldview that defines the life safe functioning of the person in whole;
5. Promotion and dissemination of scientific knowledge, advanced developments in the field of security.
Teachers of the Department regularly participate in scientific conferences, in meetings of a number of scientific and technical councils with presentations, involved in the work of expert commissions, publish collections of papers and tutorials.

In recent years published 13 benefits, including 1 monograph, 5 manuals.
