Sailing

From 7 till 9 September cadets of the Admiral Ushakov State Maritime University competed with yachtsmen from Gelendgik, Anapa, Taganrog, Sochi, Krasnodar as well as from Saint-Petersburg and Yekaterinburg.

Stages of regatta include different routes in the Tsemes Bay – races on short distances and coastal long-distance races with rounding lighthouses, navigation buoys and so on.

The crew of the yacht  “Spasibo” which wan the third place in team competition expressed their impression about regatta.

“It is a great honour for us to take part in so serious competition, though only 8 teams were the participants”, said Vladimir Zaslonov, cadet of group 651 from Engineering faculty. The weather was not good for competition, no wind at all,  therefore the organizers changed the initially plotted route several times during the races.

Fair wind, though not strong, helped one more University yacht “Uspekh” to win  the fourth place in the regatta that is also a valuable sport achievement.

As the guys say, to be in yacht sport and take part in competitions, it is important to be not only physically strong but also be prompt in taking decisions in difficult situations.

“If you pull without thinking all ropes you can not only damage the yacht but also harm yourself and other crewmembers”, Vladimir told. “If you come aboard you become a part of the crew. Each plays his own role and has his obligations which he has to meet without fail. The crew consists of five members: helmsman – one of the main members, also halyard, match,  stock and forecastle sailors”. Only due to team work cadets could achieve so high results.

Sailing today is the most prestige kind of sport. It is not important that in your town there is no sea, you may have lake, river and your own sailing school. The guys gave an example when in Krasnodar on the Krasnodar water reservoir there is one of the strongest federations of sailing sport. They are pleased to take part in competitions on fresh water, though salt sea water is more favourable.

“We think that sailing is a part of our life and we never refuse training, of course, there are a lot of various passions in the world, but better than sea can be only sea!”, says Andrey Skrebtsov with a smile, cadet of group 124 from Navigation faculty.

And we in our turn wish guys seven feet under keel, and of course fair wind.
