University History
Admiral Ushakov Maritime State University was established as Novorossiysk higher engineering maritime college (Decree of the Council of Ministers of USSR from April 30 1974 № 328), functioned since September 1st 1975. Since the 13th of March 1992 the University functioned as Novorossiysk State Maritime Academy, since September 2005 – as Admiral Ushakov Maritime State Academy and from December 2011 till nowadays – as Admiral Ushakov Maritime State University.
At the Novorossiysk Higher Engineering Maritime College were established the following Faculties: the Navigation Faculty, the Engineering Faculty, the Radio Engineering Faculty and the Correspondence one.

Since 1992 at the Novorossiysk State Maritime Academy new specialties were organized: “Economics and Management at a maritime transport” and “Electrical equipment and automation on ships”.
In 1996 was established a new Department – “Mechanization of cargo handling works”.
In 1975 at the Novorossiysk Higher Engineering Maritime College was founded a Naval Department. In 1998 this Department was converted into the Faculty of military training. This faculty conducts training of reserve officers of the Navy for the Russian Federation armed forces.
By 1995 had been graduated 6615 engineers – navigators, engineers, radio technicians.

Nowadays at the Admiral Ushakov Maritime State University by training level “higher education” trains specialists at 6 directions, bachelors at 17 directions (11 specializations) and masters at 8 directions. And by training level “Secondary professional education” the University trains at 4 directions.
Previously Novorossiysk Higher Engineering Maritime College – Novorossiysk State Maritime Academy – Admiral Ushakov Maritime State University included branches in Mariupol, Baku, Astrakhan. Today the University includes Sedov Institute of Water Transport - branch in Rostov-on-Don (higher and secondary professional education; first groups of the high school cadets formed in 1992) and Crimean branch of the University in Sevastopol (established in 2002). Crimean branch provides programs of high and specialized secondary education.
In August 1997 at the Novorossiysk State Maritime Academy was established Southern regional centre of complementary professional education. By 2009 the number of specialists trained at this centre consisted more than 140 thousands people. In December 2011 Southern regional centre was reorganized into the Institute of skills improvement. Today the Institute consists form the following departments: Southern regional centre of complementary professional education, Centre of comprehensive transport safety, Coastal training center and Maritime training centre. The Institute of skills improvement has branches – subdivisions at the Sedov Institute of Water Transport (Rostov-on-Don) and subdivision at the Crimean branch (Sevastopol). In 2014 at this Institute provides more than 200 kinds of training (for the specialists of different type and level). 26597 people had been trained at the Institute of skills improvement in 2013.
On the 27th of December 1997 at the Novorossiysk Higher Engineering Maritime College was opened a post-graduate course. Nowadays it trains on the following specialties: “Ecology” (water transport), “System analysis, management and information processing” (by industries), “Systems, networks and telecommunications device”, “Ship power plants and their components” (main and auxiliary), “Operation of water transport, navigation”, “Economics and national economy management” (on branches and fields of activity, such as economics, organization and management of enterprises, industries and complexes (water transport)), “theory and history of law and state, the history of doctrines about law and state”, “Military training and education, battle training, military pedagogy and psychology, management of the daily operations of the troops”.
Candidate’s dissertation Council was opened at the Novorossiysk State Maritime Academy in March 1994. Candidate's dissertations were taken to defense on following specialties: “Radar systems and devices” and “Navigation”. In 2001 was opened Doctoral dissertation Council on specialties: “Systems, networks and telecommunication devices” and “Ship power plants and their components” (main and auxiliary). Nowadays Doctoral dissertation Council D223.007.01 formed in 2002 takes to defense Doctoral and Candidate's dissertations on following specialties: “Ship power plants and their components” (main and auxiliary) and “Operation of water transport, navigation”.
